Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) has developed an industrial process for producing sec-butyl acetate from butylene and acetic acid with completely independent intellectual property rights. Besides the excellent product quality, the process is also featured by high conversion of 2-butylene, high selectivity of sec-butyl acetate, and long lifetime of catalyst etc.

A novel solid acid catalyst was used in the sec-butyl acetate production technology, which is undemanding to the mixed n-butylene (≥30%), with the reaction temperature of 70-80℃andthe reaction pressure of 1.6 MPa. The process performances are as follows: n-butylene conversion,≥90%; selectivity of sec-butyl acetate,≥90%.

The novel sec-butyl acetate production technology reduces the cost of raw material and corrosion of equipment remarkably. And, the process performance and energy consumption are in the domestic and international leading level.

DICP licensed the sec-butyl acetate production technology to Nanjing Bairun Chemical Ltd in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. This unit, with a capacity of 50,000 MTPA, was constructed and successfully commissioned in 2011.
